Attracting Women

Have you ever been to a careers event at a school or college? While there is no enforcement in place, you will see that gender stereotyping is still very much in play. It is a sad fact that many industries always fall very much into the category of suitable for one gender not the other. Hair and Beauty – Girls. Construction and Trades – Boys. It is a sad fact that women are still not being made aware of the varied career options within the construction industry.

I Love Gatekeepers – (Receptionists)

GrabbingAttentionThe recruitment market must be getting busier, if the reaction of receptionists around the country, is anything to measure. I am a specialist headhunter within the housebuilding sector. Occasionally, I have cause to contact an office of a house-building group to reach a certain person. Although I like to think that I’m famous, it’s pretty evident that I’m not as well-known by reception staff. Much of my work is based upon referral and recommendation. I’ve been headhunting for nearly 15 years, following a decade at director level in housebuilding, the industry sector I serve. I’ve just made a call to a company that have recently employed my services, to speak with someone who is unknown to me. The gatekeeper (receptionist) quickly obtained my name and asked which company I was from. I explained that my company is called **face-fit**, a headhunting business.

Creatures of Habit

Creatures

For as long as I can remember, the same topics and issues present themselves as one year finishes and another begins.

Television and radio is largely to blame.

It’s the time of year I find very difficult to engage with. This is because I’m a non-conformist. I don’t like to conform to the external pressures and suggestions by media.

Advertisements for supermarkets and their Christmas fayre,  brimming with a hundred ways to add a stone in a week, are constantly on our screens before Christmas. These highly charged advertisements create a desire to purchase things you don’t really need or would ever buy at any other time of the year. Consequently, supermarkets are clogged with shoppers and their over-filled trolleys.

The best part is that we are back in the shops within two days doing the same thing! Just in case the fridge is not quite as full as you’d like, the shops reopen and we can now fill the small spaces available between the silver wrapped Turkey and ham.
